Computers

Computers, I LOVE computers. Well, I guess it is a love-hate relationship. If I can’t figure out something I spend all day trying to get it to work. Best way to learn I guess. To be more specific, it’s software I really love. Without good software, we would be in the dark ages of DOS and the internet would be instant messages and command prompts. Which brings me to big bad Microsoft. But let me say this first, Microsoft has a decent product, almost everyone uses it, and it has helped many people become familiar with a computer. So before you start ranting about M$ this and M$ that, I know the arguments, but I had to give them their respect.

But now, people have a choice, albeit limited. Linux/Unix and Mac are viable options and granted not all software is compatible but the options are there and their popularity is growing. When it comes to computers I’m a windows guy, I’m not comfortable with a Mac and I only use Unix/Linux when I have to. :)

But back to the topic. I love laptop computers and desktop computers! I have a funny story about my laptop. I went up to Modesto, CA to visit my girlfriend at the time. Long story short, the waiter spills food on me, the car window was smashed and my laptop bag was stolen out of the car! Thinking that I was smooth, I had installed remote desktop software onto my laptop. So I try to log in, but whoever had it changed it just enough so that I couldn’t control the screen, but I had the IP address. At the time, I figured that’s all I need, I’ll send this to the police and let them handle it, should have my laptop back in a couple of hours. WRONG! Detective said that they can’t do anything with this. Alright, I’ll hunt for more information. So I call Verizon, because that’s where this IP is originating from. I tell them my situation, after getting the run around throughout the company. They say that they can’t give out that information, only to the police, if there is an investigation. So I go back and tell the detective who gives my information to the Tech department. I follow up a few days later, and they are unable to do anything. Minus one laptop for me.

I used to get scared when something would show my IP address, but after that incident, unless I’m suspected of terrorist activity, then IP address doesn’t really matter. Besides, I got a great list of proxies. :)

When I build a new computer first couple things that I need to have on there are: Backup software and data recovery or hard drive data recovery. I don’t even worry about a spyware blocker or spyware remover. Personally, I don’t run anti-virus either. But I have my computers set up so I don’t need it.

But let me explain. I have one computer that I don't mess around with, one is a gaming machine, and the last one probably always has a virus. That's why I use backup software, I restore it back to health when I'm done goofing off.
